It's Time To Get Rid of the Newtonian Mechanistic & Random Thermodynamic "Steam Engine" model of the Human Body.
Erwin Schrodinger, What is Life? (1944) noted that quantum mechanics accounts for the stability of living things and their cellular processes because of our understanding, via quantum mechanics, of the stability and structure of molecules.
The fact the quantum effects create sometimes large, energy gaps between different states of chemical systems is also important.
Such energy gaps between electronic energy levels enable living organisms to capture and store energy carried from the sun by photons.
Quantum Mechanics - required to explain the properties of molecules and their reactions in biochemical processes ranging from the action of enzymes to genetic expression of phenotypes and the very construction of a living organism.
Quantum Biology - Identifies biological phenomenon that make explicit use of quantum mechanics to attain functionality to carry out the process. Quantum Biology studies the dynamical influence of quantum effects in biological systems.
Biological Phenomenon ----> Quantum Process
1) Vision, light-sensing/repsonse, Vitamin D biosynthesis, bioluminescence ---> Large energy gaps because of electronic excited states
2) Respiration/Photosynthesis ----> Electron Tunnelling
3) Magnetoreception ----> Radical Pairs and electron spin
4) Light harvesting in photosynthesis -----> Electronic energy transfer involving quantum coherence
Biology shows the existence of capabilities, efficiencies and emergent phenomenon that would otherwise be impossible.

Pascal Jordan's 1943 book, he posed the "Are the laws of atomic and quantum physics of essential importance for life?" Coined term Quantum Biology. Mainly theoretical, but technology has improved since to probe high energies, fast speeds, smaller time and spacial dimensions.
Biological systems tend to be warm, wet and noisy (latter because of environmental fluctuations). Rapid decoherence and suppression of quantum features.
Molecular complexes and proteins are well localized (nanometers) and very fast, so can exhibit quantum phenomenon before environment has opportunity to destroy them.
But there is now Extensive Research that quantum effects DO take place in Biology.

Quantum physics can solve the biggest mysteries
Quantum vs Classical computers shows power of quantum over classical.
Deep in cells of animals, particles glide through walls like ghosts.
When plant cells capture sunlight, their cells are invaded by shimmering waves that can be everywhere at the same time.
And even our human senses are tuning in to strange quantum vibrations.
Quantum biology, life is a game of chance played by quantum rules.
Quantum mechanics is essential in explaining the many important processes in life.
Quantum mechanics might even underpin the very existence of life itself.
Quantum biology explains that some of these strange quantum effects can and do occur in biological systems. In fact many processes DEPEND on the quantum weirdness and might turn out to be essential. This is very surprising and unexpected.
And its not just cold temp and single atoms.
If Physicists want to study quantum effects, typically extremely sophisticated equipment is needed.
They need to cool things down to maybe a few degrees of absolute zero, they need to create extreme vacuums greater than interstellar space.
Take great pains to make sure things are not disturbed by the environment.
The world of the cell is warm, wet and messy… Seeing quantum effects here is much like trying to meditate on a New York city main street corner at rush hour.
And yet it happens…

Quantum Tunneling - Enzymes - The Miracle of Metamorphosis - EARTH
Living cells of ALL animals depend on protons that vanish and reappear like ghosts speeding up the vital processes of life.
Transformation of a tadpole to a frog so fast. Amazing how the tail is reabsorbed and the proteins recycled. Trillions of reactions in concert work together to make this miracle happen. Breaking molecules and building new ones. Tadpole held together by long ropes of proteins, knotted by chemical bonds (rope and knots). Bonds are so strong they should last for years. How? Tiny widgets in all our cells called Enzymes. Enzymes are actually a machinery of the cell. They are the little machines inside cells that do the chemical transformations. So crucial because they accelerate chemical reactions by enormous amounts.
Enzyme in body. 100 grams of liver makes a rocket of hydrogen peroxide go 20 feet. Happens a trillion times faster than without. Enzymes in tadpole break down the tail so quickly mainly collagen which is the dominant protein. Collagen is the protein that gives resilience and elasticity to tendons , cartilage and our skin. It is the scaffold of the tail of the tadpole. Colleganase is the enzyme that snips the collagen into small pieces and thereby take that scaffold apart. How do enzymes work so fast?!! It's a problem only quantum biology can solve. You have to overcome an energy barrier to break apart all the chemical bonds (untie the knots). To break a bond apart , it needs enough energy to get over the barrier. When you work out how long… Too slow… This is where protons turn into ghosts. In the quantum world, protons do not have to go over barriers, they can tunnel straight through. Protons and electrons are not solid objects, they have spread out, fuzzy wavelike behavior that allows them to leap through an energy barrier. A particle can disappear on one side of a barrier, and instantaneously reappear on another (quantum jumping). In nuclear physics this is a proven fact. Without quantum tunneling the sun simply would not shine. Without quantum tunneling the metamorphosis of a tadpole would be impossible. Chemical bonds are basically knots, tunneling unties them quickly. 2 knots, one hard , one easy, turns hard knots into easy ones. Radioactive decay, goes on in the sun. Since every cell has enzymes, tunneling is going on in every cell in every organism on earth. That is TRULY amazing… Quantum biology casts its spell over every living creature.
The quantum mechanical process of tunnelling allows classical energy barriers to be circumvented to some extent, by virtue of time-energy uncertainty. The protein backbone helps donor and acceptor wavefunctions delocalize towards each other (instead of exponential decay). The result is a superexchange mechanism that speeds up electron tunneling rates by 10 orders of magnitude compared to similar distances through a vacuum.

How the Mitochondria Creates Energy
Moving around Hydrogen atoms
Generation of energy and respiration… Tunneling of Hydrogen (Cytochrome C oxidase for example).
Hydrogen has to cross an energy barrier… Like getting an apple off a tree, you have to tug it off.
Made easier by tunneling. Its like the apple just appearing in your hand without tugging it.
How do we know it happens? The ease of quantum tunneling depends on the mass of the particle.

Quantum Superposition - Photosynthesis - FIRE
Photosynthesis reveals the big picture where quantum waves capture the suns energy in an instant.
The single vital process on which ALL life depends… The conversion of air and sunlight into plants. Photosynthesis.
European Larch. And right this moment passing just side of venus is a Bullet with this trees name on it. The bullet is a photon nearing the end of its long journey from the sun. It's ultimate destiny is to kick start a series of chemical reactions that underpins all life on earth… Photosynthesis. Every day 16,000 tons of new plant life are created on earth. Our existence on this planet depends on what happens in the next trillionth of a second. The crucial first stage of photosynthesis is the capture of energy from the sun. It's nearly 100% efficient , vastly superior to any human technology.
But the way every plant achieves this is one of the great puzzles in biology. When it turned out quantum weirdness might hold the answer, quantum physicists could hardly believe it. Textbook biology says the color of green plants comes from
chlorophyll molecules. Inside the living cells they absorb light from the sun. This energy is then transferred very quickly to the food making factory at the heart of the cell. The entire event takes a trillionth of a second. When a photon hits a cell, it knocks a electron out of the center of a chlorophyll molecule. This creates a tiny packet of energy called an exciton. The exciton then bounces it way through a forest of chlorophyll molecules , until it reaches what is called the reaction center. That is where its energy is used to create the all important biomolecules of life…glucose + O2. The problem is the exciton has to FIND its way to the reaction center in the first place. Textbook biology cannot explain how it does this, because it does not know where it is going (blindfolded). It just bounces around like a pinball in a process called a random walk. Sooner or later it will pass through every part of the cell, but this is a VERY inefficient way to get around, because when the exciton DOES reach the reaction center , it is by pure chance. This takes too long and the exciton would lose its energy as waste heat.
Something very different goes on… Chemists fire lasers at plant cells to simulate light from the sun.
It turns out that Plants obey the most famous law in quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle. You can never be certain that the exciton is in one specific place. Intead it behaves like a quantum wave, smearing itself out across the cell.
The exciton does not simply move from A to B, instead in a bizarre, but very real sense, it is heading in EVERY DIRECTION at the SAME TIME. It spreads itself out as a wave so it can explore all possible routes simultaneously. This strikes at the very heart of what is so strange about quantum mechanics… The exciton wave is not just going this way OR that way, it is following all paths at the same time. That is what gives it such incredible efficiency. The beauty of it is, if the exciton is trying all possible routes at once, it is bound to find the fastest possible way to deliver its energy.
Somehow excitons maintain there form in the hot, wet busy environment of the cells.
Mae Wan Ho - Photosynthesis
Now in 2010, one of the things that most excites biologists is quantum coherence in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process whereby green plants and other organisms harvest light. They obtain energy from the sun for growing and doing all the sorts of things that constitute being alive. Using very sophisticated instrumentation, scientists have discovered that the very fast reactions involve quantum coherence. They are amazed that quantum coherence can exist, and can persist for hundreds of femtoseconds. A femtosecond is 10-15 second. And this happens over a distance of nanometers (10-9m). Scientists are very excited about that, which is sad, because the whole organism is quantum coherent.

Quantum Vibrations - Sense of Smell - AIR
Quantum vibrations allows our noses to "listen" to chemicals.
There is a whole new world to explore. The latest experiments say that you are doing quantum physics right now! You are doing it with your Nose.
Our sense of smell is remarkable and quite different from our other senses of sight and hearing. Thousands of scents we can recognize and some can trigger very powerful memories and emotions. Directly connected to our inner consciousness.
Sight and hearing work by use detecting waves of light and sound, but the sense of smell involves us detecting particles or chemical molecules. Recently scientists have begun to realize that when it comes to our sense of smell, something VERY mysterious is going on. For decades biologist THOUGHT they knew how our noses sniffed out different chemicals, but recently new discoveries show it smells like quantum physics. Every human being gives off a cocktail of chemicals.
When our noses detect a chemical, they fire different nerve impulses to our brains. Different chemicals create different sensations. The standard explanation of this has to do with the SHAPE of the molecules. Particular shapes "fit in" to different receptor molecules in our nose. Lock and key mechanism. Triggering that unique smell sensation. Different receptors are wired to different parts of our brains. Cynaide and benzalhedye and cyanide BOTH smell of almonds but are BOTH VERY different shapes. Lock and key cannot be the whole story.
Head spinning explanation in quantum biology. Our noses are NOT smelling chemical molecules, they are LISTENING to them. The quantum theory of smell is all about vibrating bonds.
Nose provides the guitar and the chemical bonds of the molecules we are smelling provide the vibrating strings. Chemical molecules are playing music for our noses. Receptor molecules contain quantum particles - electrons… As they leap from one atom to another they vibrate the bonds of the scent molecule, like fingers plucking a guitar string.
What is remarkable about this theory is that it tells us the sense of smell is about the vibrations of molecules or wavelike behavior and not so much the shape of a particular scent molecule. Our sense of smell might be more like our sense of hearing. Grass for example will vibrate at one frequency … mint another. Cynaide and almonds have different shapes, but their chemical bonds just happen to vibrate at the same frequency. Should be able to change it smell by changing vibration. You could make a musk molecule with deuterium which will change the vibration because it is 2x as heavy, so it vibrates more slowly. Experiments with fruit flies.
A second ingredient acts together with the lock and key model; that is, the vibrational spectrum of the odorant is important. It has been suggested that the mechanisim in play here is a phonon assisted tunnelling of an electron between two receptor sites via the odorant.

Quantum Entanglement - Magnetoreception in Birds and Migratory Animals - PEMF
1) European Robin and (Entanglement)
Quantum entanglement allows robins to navigate with incredible precision.
Migration - How birds navigate one of greatest mysteries…
Utilizes a quirk of quantum… The quantum robin. European Robin. Every year the robins migrates from Northern Europe to the tip of Spain and back.
In the strange world of quantum physics we have to abandon common sense and intuition.
Objects can spread out like waves, quantum particles can be in many places at once and send each other mysterious communications.
Robins respond to magnetic fields and leave scratches in a certain direction. The eye is part of the compass. The Robins magnetic compass seems to be in the eyes. Energetic peaks and valleys. Molecules at top of energetic peaks very sensitive to change.
Quantum entangle - it involves particles that seem to communicate faster than the speed of light.
Many experiments now have proven beyond a doubt that subatomic particles are entangled and can influence each other subtly and instantaneously across space.
Same thing going on in a robins eye. When a photon enters a robins eye it creates an entangled pair of electrons. Each electron has two possible states, for simplicity call them red and green. Here is the weird thing, Until you measure it, it is neither one nor the other but both at the same time. Think of the electrons as spinning disks that are simultaneously both red and green. By firing a dart, you can force the electron to be one or the other. If first is read, you would think you would have a 50-50 chance of getting red or green. That is what you would expect in the normal everyday world. If you get red on the first , you will always get red on the second. In quantum entanglement the electrons are mysteriously linked. It is as if the first electron is telling the second electron what to do. That is why einstein called it spooky. They can be entangled in a different way, if the first is red, the other is ALWAYS green. More likely red red at equator, more likely red green at poles. That is why something as weak as the earths magnetic field can tip that balance one way or the other. If the message changes the chemical reaction tips a different way, changing the robins compass reading.
Looks like fundamentally a quantum phenomenon in robins. The Robin is navigating by spooky quantum entanglement.
To see subtle quantum effects even in a controlled sterile environment of a physics lab is very difficult, and yet the Robin does it with ease. These results are real and verifiable.

Quantum Tunneling / Quantum Information - DNA - Information
The ultra modern science of quantum mechanics is an ancient fact of life
Thought experience:
Does quantum physics have a role in Evolution?
In 1859 Charles Darwin stunned the world with his theory of evolution by Natural Selection. Can quantum evolution explain how a snail got its shell. Evolution depends on variation within a species. Snails with camouflage are more likely to survive than snails without and reproduce, passing on their shells to the next generation so that the species as a whole becomes better adapted. Variation, the random differences between snails is the driving force behind their evolution. All species evolve and adapt to their environment. Does quantum mechanics play a role in this?
DNA holds the genetic code for every living organism. Darwin himself had no idea what created variation in the species. The structure of DNA was not discovered until 1953. Beautiful double helix structure, but that is scaffolding, the real secret is what lies in between. Four compounds called bases (think as four colors) that make up DNA. The color code on each side say blue, red, blue, forms a gene that parents pass on to their offspring. A gene is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. A full strand of a double helix forms a colored pattern. But the other strand always pairs up the same way. A blue base always goes with yellow, and a green base always goes with red. Because only those colors have the right shape to fit together. Watson and Crick realized this provides a mechanism for passing on the genetic code. When cells reproduce the two strands of DNA separate, ready to be copied. But red still goes with green and yellow still goes with blue. New copy identical to the original.
During the copying process , sometimes mistakes can creep in, they are called mutations. The prongs that hold the base pairs together are subatomic particles- protons… They are basically the bonds across the strands of DNA (hydrogen bonds). These protons can jump across to the other side. If the strands split when the protons jump across, they can find themselves in the wrong position. Instead for example, the green base will no longer bond to a red base, but has to bond tot a yellow base. Now the copy is different, a mutation is born.
Jumping protons will CHANGE the snails DNA. Make a new gene for camouflage shells.
But how do the protons jump?
Protons have to overcome an energy barrier. Protons can behave as if barriers do not exist, they tunnel straight through. Does this ghosty effect really happen… Looking for quantum mutations. Change the rate of mutation. Replace the proton with the Deuteron. Twice as heavy. Influences how easy it is for it to tunnel. Protons tunnel easy, Deuterons do not… Samples of bacteria prepared in heavy water should have less mutations then regular water. far fewer mutations.
So far, results are encouraging.
Real quantum effects are going on in Nature all the time. Quantum biology is a revolution in science.

"If technology can do it, biology has already perfected it."
- James Oschmann
Biology has experimented with every physical law in the universe and capitalized on it and used it to its advantage.
Not just basic laws of physics like gravity, electricity, magnetism and light, but also modern physics such as quantum field theory, solid state physics, quantum computing, superconductivity, etc.
And almost certainly MANY undiscovered ideas of physics are like buried treasures lurking in the physics of life.

Goal is not to reduce biology to quantum mechanics, but to evolve quantum mechanics upward to biology.
Life and consciousness along with its energy and information fields is the central unifying concept.
These fields evolve with higher levels consciousness.
Quantum Mechanics is the square root of classical mechanics
Consciousness, Spontaneity and Interconnectedness
0) Observer Effect - Consciousness creates reality
1) Quantization - h - planck. Universe is pixelated
2) Uncertainty Principle
3) Wave Particle Duality - Ѱ(x) --> Leads to things like tunneling.
4) Superposition ΣAi*Ѱ(x)
5) Probability P(i) = |Ai|^2 (not deterministic). Modifications of classical probability law.
6) Schrodinger Equation (Evolution of System)
7) Entanglement (connected to Entropy and information).
8) Qubits - Quantum logic and information (logic boolean, language is Newton, brains wired for macroscopic world)
Isolated pure states.. vacuum, cold, crystal
**Zurek Decoherence Equation - time decoherence Td dependent on 1)Mass (# particles) , 2)Displacement (distance), 3)Temperature, 4)Flexibility
Coherence works best:
1) small # particles,
2) close together(nano spaces),
3) low temperatures,
4) rigid crystals or liquid crystals.
Exceptions - Superconductors… Biology!!!
Only works for PHASE dependent phenomena … Quantum Jumps, Superposition, Uncertainty and Oberver/Measurement guided dynamics still exist beyond this border.
